Quality Teeth Whitening
If you have stained teeth, you might be wondering how to achieve whiter teeth. Some toothpaste brands claim to whiten teeth, as do over-the-counter tooth-whitening products. These products are not as strong as the professional strength teeth whitening that are administered at our office. While many of these products are often safe if the patient follows the manufacturer’s instructions precisely, patients might not recognize the risks of do-it-yourself whitening.
Some patients should not use whitening products, including:
• Patients with cavities
• Patients with periodontal disease
• Patients with weak tooth enamel
• Patients who are planning to have other dental procedures such as crowns, veneers, and dental bonding
The hydrogen peroxide in most tooth-whitening products can weaken tooth enamel and make some dental problems like periodontal disease worse. Patients who overuse tooth whitening products can do irreparable damage to tooth enamel. They also irritate the gums if the applicator tray or mouthguard does not fit the patient’s teeth.
Dentists and dental hygienists keep patients safe by detecting these risk factors and monitoring patients’ oral health throughout the process.
At Sidky Family Dental, we use Opalescence™ teeth whitening gels to give you a whiter, brighter smile. We have in-office and at-home options available.
